Church Ope Studio is a rare, quality hideaway right near the start of the English National Coast path at Rufus Castle, Church Ope, Isle of Portland, Dorset. This is also the South West Coast Path on the Jurassic coast.
The Studio faces East towards sunrise, the East cliffs and the ancient ruins of Rufus Castle. Situated on Church Ope road, a no through lane onto the coast path.
You can walk out of your front door onto the coast path, to Penn wood with ancient St Andrews church ruins, complete with 'Pirate's grave' round the island, to Portland Bill, to the 2012 Olympic Sailing Academy and to the village square at Easton a seven to ten minute walk away.
Easton Square has a small, well kept park with evergreen oaks and public loos. There are supermarkets, (Co-op and Tesco) chemist, post office, dr. surgery, vets, pet shop, bakery, charity shops, haberdashery, pubs, takeaways and cafes. (Whitestones arts cafe, a vintage shop and cafe and the Sugar Loaf cosy cafe.)
Nearest town is Weymouth. Buses to and from Weymouth and train station leave from Easton Square.
In the Summer May to September the open top bus 501 leaves from outside Church Ope Road museum to Portland Bill and Weymouth.
The Studio is 15 miles from the county town of Dorchester. Buses or train from Weymouth.
Due to Covid cleaning schedule arrival now is from 4pm and departure by 11am. Come and park from 3pm and take a breather while the Studio is aired in readiness for you.
At the entrance to Church Ope Road is the thatched Portland Museum and a stone arch into the former grounds of Penn Castle.
To arrive at the Studio drive slowly down the lane and round the corner past the white cottage with the bench in front. Stop before the driveway gates. These open outwards. Open and secure gates against the walls.
Drive onto rather than back in - this by far the easiest way!
